Nils Melngailis

Nils Melngailis is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal and Co-Head of the firm's Financial Industry Advisory Services Practice. He brings 18 years of experience in complex operational and balance sheet restructuring, creditor relations, strategy implementation, transaction management and performance improvement. Mr. Melngailis has worked with clients across a range of industries with a focus on banking, telecommunications and IT.

Prior to joining A&M, Mr. Melngailis served as CEO and Chairman at Parex Bank, the largest privately held bank in the Baltic region. During the recent crisis he restructured syndicated debt, and institutional deposits, brought in the EBRD as shareholder, implemented a new client segment strategy and reversed a liquidity crisis. An assessment of all assets and liabilities had to be reviewed across 12 countries to determine which are core, and which are non-performing/non-core. During this period Mr. Melngailis also served as a Senior Advisor to the Blackstone Group for the CEE region.

Mr. Melngailis began his career as a partner in PwC, where he served as Chairman of PwC in the Baltics and member of the CEE management team and part of the financial services practice. In this capacity he led reporting accountant assignments for the Central Bank of Latvia during the banking crisis of 1995. Later, he became a partner in the London practice of PwC Consulting in Strategic Mergers & Acquisitions. As a senior executive at IBM, he was head of Business Intelligence in EMEA and part of the Financial Services group. Within this capacity, he has worked on major transformations of banking operations and has worked with clients across Europe.

Mr. Melngailis has earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Boston College, studied Eastern European affairs at the Austro-American Institute in Vienna and did his post-graduate studies in corporate finance and law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Mr. Melngailis is a Fulbright Scholar and a citizen of Latvia (EU) and the United States.
